History of Saint John AME
Saint John AME Church (1855-2020)
Founded in Faith (1855)
Saint John African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church was established in Baltimore in October 1855 by Rev. James R. Sterrit, appointed by Bishop William Paul Quinn. Initially housed in a humble blacksmith shop on Tessier Street, St. John quickly became a thriving spiritual community. Rev. Jacob Nicholson's leadership secured official recognition from the AME Conference, solidifying our church’s legacy.
Growth and Expansion
In 1894, Saint John moved to Lexington Street, and in 1929, under Rev. E. D. Rice, settled into its current location on Carrollton Avenue in the Lafayette Square/Harlem Park community. A beloved annual Christmas Candlelight Service, introduced by Rev. Henri R. Tomlin, became a cherished Baltimore tradition.
Rising from Ashes (1943)
A devastating fire in 1943 destroyed the Carrollton Avenue church, but under the inspiring leadership of Rev. Harrison J. Bryant, the congregation rebuilt by faith. In April 1945, worship resumed triumphantly at our beloved Carrollton Avenue home.
Community and Renewal
Throughout the years, pastors like Rev. Isaac Gray, Rev. Benjamin Foust, and Rev. Dr. Maurice Wilson enriched our church spiritually and materially, establishing vibrant ministries and extensive community outreach programs.
Historic Leadership (2004-2020)
In 2004, Rev. Dr. Peggy E. Wall made history as our first female pastor, strengthening our ministries, expanding outreach, and enhancing worship through renewed traditions and partnerships.
Saint John AME Now
A New Season of Growth (2020-Present)
In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Rev. Brandon O. McAfee became the 46th pastor of Historic Saint John AME Church on July 24, 2020. Stepping into leadership during unprecedented times, Pastor McAfee brought faith, vision, and resilience, guiding the congregation through both challenges and new opportunities.
Under Pastor McAfee’s leadership, Saint John has experienced significant spiritual growth and renewal, welcoming new members and witnessing transformative spiritual experiences among its congregation. He has revitalized the church’s ministries, re-establishing the Youth and Men’s Choirs, and creating vibrant opportunities for worship and service. Community outreach has also expanded, strengthening the church’s connections with the surrounding neighborhoods through meaningful engagement and service initiatives.
Recognizing the importance of financial stewardship, Pastor McAfee has led successful efforts to significantly reduce the church's debt, ensuring sustainability for future generations. Embracing innovation, he introduced a hybrid worship model, seamlessly integrating technology and social media into the church's mission. This model has allowed members and visitors to actively participate in worship both in-person and online, expanding the church’s reach and impact beyond physical boundaries.
Guided by the theme "Together," inspired by Acts 2:42-47, Pastor McAfee continues to foster unity, collaboration, and spiritual growth, believing firmly that our best days lie ahead. The Saint John family moves forward, deeply committed to its historical legacy and inspired by a shared vision for a vibrant, faith-filled future.
